The Arizona Healthcare Leadership Academy is a
collaboration between The University of Arizona College of Nursing, Eller
College of Management, Arizona Nurses Association, and Arizona Hospital
and Healthcare Association.
The Academy is a two-tiered program, each tier consisting of four education
days, designed to teach fundamental (Tier
I) and advanced (Tier II)
leadership skills to professionals in the healthcare
industry. Participants receive 26.4
contact hours from the Arizona Nurses Association upon program completion.
The Academy also offers a new Directors
Only program. Participants receive 22.5
contact hours from the Arizona Nurses Association upon program
completion.
Our goal is developing leaders who have the confidence and skills to
improve the quality of the healthcare work environment.

Effken
Receives the 2008 Ada Sue Hinshaw Award
Judith A. Effken, PhD, RN, FACMI, FAAN, Professor, received the prestigious 2008 Ada Sue Hinshaw Award on October 1st at the annual Friends of the Nursing Institute for Nursing Research (FNINR) Nightingala in Washington, D.C., for her significant research towards improving healthcare. The Ada Sue Hinshaw Research grant is funded by FNINR in honor of Ada Sue Hinshaw, PhD, RN, FAAN, the first permanent Director of the National Institute of Nursing Research. The award is an unrestricted grant to support the work of a promising and accomplished
nurse researcher.
Dr. Effken was recognized for development of theory and methods in Nursing Informatics. She has applied ecological psychology theory to develop clinical information displays that facilitate the problem detection of practicing nurses and students. In addition, she was the first to apply computational modeling techniques to the study of complex, multi-level nursing systems in order to improve quality and safety outcomes. Her current research, which is funded by the National Library of Medicine, focuses on the development of a dynamic network analysis decision support tool for nurse managers to enable them to make better decisions about innovations that they might implement to improve patient safety and quality outcomes. She has achieved national and international recognition for her research in informatics and is a Fellow in both the American Academy of Nursing and the American College of Medical Informatics.

For the first time ever, The Arizona Healthcare Leadership Academy (AzHCLA)
is holding a Tier I Program at the Eller College of Management Scottsdale
Facility that begins October 23rd. This four-day executive education
program is designed for front-line nursing professionals, including
team leaders, charge nurses, healthcare managers, supervisors and all
healthcare providers who aspire to such positions from facilities across
Arizona.
